The high pitched noise happens about 2-3 times a day, and lasts for about 1-2 minutes before stopping itself. Most of the time, it doesn't make the noise, so if I pull the hard drive out, I wouldn't be able to tell if it's responsible for the noise.

Even if it does turn out to be the fan, immediately is always the right time to back up. That's the problem with explaining noise-related issues on a forum - everyone has a different way of describing the sound.Īlso, with any potential hard drive problem, you should always back up important data immediately. Your fan might simply be running at full speed, which will sound more like a high speed whirring noise (imagine a really tiny hair drier at full blast). The fan in the linked video isn't spinning correctly, hence the stop-start nature of the sound. It's only a couple of screws and you'll find videos on youtube showing you how. Pull the hard drive out and you'll soon see if it's responsible for the noise. The buzzing noise that im hearing from my laptop sounds a lot more high pitched than the sound in that video above.Īlso, when I put my ear close to the laptop, the noise clearly sounds the loudest near the front left of the laptop, which is where the HDD is located. If it's the fan, would it sound exactly the same as it does in this video or would it vary depending on the laptop? So, in my case, a drop of oil and some anti-vibration measures did the trick and it's been fine ever since. So I superglued one edge to the lower case and used some sticky padded tabs to prevent noise if motherboard did vibrate against hard plastic. It appeared to rely on the case to keep it clamped and I didn't think it was doing that very well and possibly vibrating. I also noticed that the main board was not actually fixed to anything, on 3 sides, and no means of doing so. So I put a couple of drops of 3in1 on that. There wasn't a lube point under the fan label, but I found that the blades just pulled off the shaft. On my laptop, getting at the fan is a full stripdown but I had a go, expecting to have to replace it. I'd already had it apart, to replace the screen I managed to break in the first few weeks, so the warranty was voided. If I pressed down on the case near the fan it stopped.

My new'ish laptop started buzzing 4 years ago. Overheating can be checked before pulling the laptop apart.
